BREAKING CYCLES & REDEEMING TIME
THE POWER OF ELUL
Several years ago, I said YES to an invitation from the Lord to align myself with His rhythms, His times and His seasons. When you say YES to these things, you rarely understand the fullness of what you’re saying YES to. And that began a journey of learning and exploration with Him that still captivates me….
We know that there is no time in God, and that Jesus is the fulfillment of all the feasts. Yet, if we align ourselves with His established rhythm, we will have an added grace propelling us into His plans and purposes. In Christ, we are not limited by time and space, and through Him, we can legally access a realm outside of time. Not only do we have access to God the Father through Christ, but we also have access to higher dimensions, dimensions outside of time. Yet in the earth realm, God has put a rhythm in the very fabric of His creation, like the way that there is a certain time to plant and harvest certain crops. We can rise above the laws of earth, but we must understand and honor them first. If we break these laws due to ignorance or lawlessness, we will pay the consequences and may miss some wonderful things the Lord has given us.
Genesis 1:14 says that the heavenly lights were given to us for signs and seasons. The Hebrew word for seasons is “moed”, which literally means “APPOINTED TIME.” It is the same word used when referring to the Biblical feasts.
Psalm 89:15, “Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied)
are the people who know the joyful sound
[who understand and appreciate the spiritual blessings symbolized by the feasts]; they walk, O Lord, in the light and favor of Your countenance!”
THE HEBREW MONTH OF ELUL
Though not mentioned in Scripture (the months were not named until the Babalonian captivity), the Hebrew month of Elul begins a Jewish tradition of 40 days of repentance in preparation for Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). Elul literally means “search.” We are given a time to search our hearts in preparation for Yom Teruah and, ultimately, Yom Kippur.
In the Spirit, these 40 days are transitional, a “flex” time in the Spirit, where the rhythm of God’s grace makes it easier to break free of negative cycles.
RECURRING CYCLES ARE A MANIFESTATION OF THE LAW OF RESONANT FREQUENCY: WE DON’T GET WHAT WE WANT; WE GET WHAT WE RESONATE
Natural and spiritual laws apply to everyone, whether we believe in God or not, or whether we understand them or not. Is God cruel because I hit the ground after jumping off of a 10-story building? Did He throw me to the ground? No, I am just subject to natural laws….. Until I discover and begin operating by a higher law.
Basically, we draw to ourselves the strongholds in our soul.
The Biblical term “stronghold” is just that – a strong hold. THEY HOLD US IN A CYCLE! It is the structure that gives the enemy legal ground, and it is the place of agreement that allows demonic oppression. The Greek word for stronghold, taken literally, means a fortress.
II Corinthians 10:3-5
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God
for pulling down strongholds, casting down imaginations and every high thing
that exalts itself against the knowledge of God,
bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
The process of tearing down strongholds is basically the process of maturation, of being “changed from glory to glory” (II Corinthians 3:18), of “bring transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).
Strongholds consist of:
1. What is in our DNA; our generational memory
This law was created for blessing, to pass down good from generation to generation. But it also works negatively.
2. Our life experiences, positive or negative
3. What we think (our core belief system, which includes our subconscious and unconscious minds—not our religious correct answers)
4. What we feel (even emotions that have been repressed or shut down)
Emotions resonate strongly from any place there has been a hurt or trauma. And emotional thoughts are far more powerful than rational ones.
5. How we see ourselves (generally a result of life experiences, how our parents saw us, what they said, how they taught us to see ourselves and what they modeled for us)
6. Habits and patterns (usually survival mechanisms)
These habits and pattens may have been the only way we knew to cope or to survive. But at a certain place of maturity, they become a hindrance to our destiny and we must let them go.
WHERE THERE IS FRUIT, THERE IS A ROOT!
God knows that we will sin (miss the mark), so everything about His interaction with us is redemptive. Revelation 13:8 calls Jesus “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” But God has also built a redemptive rhythm into His created world, and into His seasons and feasts.
THE KING IS IN THE FIELD
In Hebrew the letters of Elul (alef, lamed, vav, lamed) are an acronym for the phrase “Ani ledodi vedodi li” which is “I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine” (Song of Solomon 6:3). In Hebrew tradition, Elul is the time when “the King is in the field rather than in the palace.” Unlike other times when He is in the palace, once a year, during the month of Elul, He is walking in the fields, easily accessible to all. Of course we know that the veil has been torn, and, because of Christ, we can approach His throne boldly. But the point is that during this season, there is a special nearness, when God is present, speaking to us about what needs to be redeemed from past cycles and seasons.
In the Spirit, it can feel like everything is loose, uncertain. But that is intentional on God’s part. Because, before each new cycle, He gives us the opportunity to properly align.
During this month, I usually set aside specific time to listen, and to pray through things I am struggling with, as well as past dreams, revelation and prophetic words. Two years after doing this for the first time during Elul, I looked back at the things the Holy Spirit highlighted to me, and I was amazed to see that He had uprooted almost all of them!
YOM TERUAH (FEAST OF TRUMPETS)
The first day of the following month, the month of Tishrei, is Yom Teruah or the Feast of Trumpets. It can be viewed as a prophetic wake-up call. But I believe it is also the traditional trumpet call blown to announce the King. In other words, on this day, we are choosing to make Him King over all the areas He has spoken to us about and over our lives.
YOM KIPPUR (THE DAY OF ATONEMENT)
There are 10 days between Yom Teruah and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) which are called the Days of Awe. There is much to say about this day, but in the context of this teaching, I just want to mention that, at Yom Kippur, we will be sealed for another cycle and we will eat from the fruit of what we have said yes to and what we have said no to. I believe that many times, this fruit manifests in the earthly, natural realm by Passover, in the spring.
1. Don’t get legalistic or trade with a spirit of fear. Just realize we have a God-given opportunity where He is pouring out abundant grace to break free of negative cycles, so that they do not become more deeply entrenched.
2. Don’t strive or try to figure it out or fix yourself: In John 6:63, Jesus said, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” We should never fear a corrective word from the Lord, because there is always an abundance of grace (Divine empowerment) that comes with every word He speaks.
3. Our part is just to be sensitive and yielded to His voice, and to agree with what He is doing in us. Listen to the Lord and write down places where there is fruit you do not want to take into the next season.
Declare this: “This work in my soul is not done by my own strength, by working or striving or figuring it out. It is all by grace through faith by revelation. As I agree with God and co-labor with Him, I will break free of every ungodly cycle and will produce abundant fruit in this new season!”
BREAKING REPETITIVE CYCLES
Time is not linear, but cyclic. Every year, as earth revolves around the sun, we pass the same place in the universe that we have been before. We are greatly affected by the layers of experiences before us—both our own and our ancestors.
Several years ago, a very prophetic friend had a dream. She saw me worshipping and interceding on the keyboard, and, though she didn’t totally understand it, she knew that it had something to do with the alignment of the stars and some promises of God manifesting on the earth. That left me with more questions than answers, so I began asking the Lord if I align with the stars or if I align them. A few weeks later, I had the first of a series of encounters where Jesus spoke to me out of Song of Solomon 2: “Arise, My love, My fair one, and come away.” He grabbed me by the hand and we flew into the stars, where together, we rearranged them.
This encounter helped me to better understand the authority that the Father has given His sons over time and creation. Because the heavenly lights were given to us for signs and seasons (Genesis 1:14) and because Jesus gave us back the dominion over creation that Adam forfeited, we, like the Roman centurion in Matthew 8, are both under authority and walk in authority. In complete submission to Jesus, we are able to legally walk in authority over creation. This is why creation groans for the revealing of the mature sons of God (Romans 8:19-22). Creation came out of alignment at the fall, and is still subject to powers of darkness. It longs to be brought back into submission and proper alignment to the plans, purposes and seasons of God… and that will happen through us!
Through Jesus, we are able to break free of the negative cycles in our lives and to supernaturally redeem all the time that has been lost!
SUPERNATURAL REDEEMING OF TIME
It is no coincidence that God took Abram (a Chaldean, who understood the stars) outside to look at the stars when He made a covenant with him promising Him descendants (Genesis 15:5). Thirteen years passed, and, again, God appeared to Abraham saying, “At the appointed time (Moed), I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.” (Genesis 18:14). And God kept His promise, returning a season of fruitfulness to one who was long past the age of childbearing.
In Joshua 10, God had the sun stand still until Israel had completely subdued their enemies. And in Judges 5, Deborah, a prophet and worshipping warrior, acknowledged that the stars themselves were fighting on Israel’s behalf.
From the heavens the stars fought, from their courses they fought against Sisera.
WORSHIP AND INTERCESSION
Worship and intercession are portals through which we can enter another dimension, a dimension outside of time. From that place, (because we are submitted to God and also walking in our authority), we bring the seasons into alignment with the will of the Father and things that were done or not done in past seasons can be supernaturally redeemed and brought back into alignment. And, with the beginning of a new season, those things are sealed and solidified to bring forth fruit. It is a redemptive cycle created by God for our good, but, like any other natural or spiritual law, works for good or for evil. If cycles are not broken, they will become more deeply entrenched.
Again, we know that Jesus is the embodiment of Jubilee and of all the feasts, so we can access His redeeming power at any time. But I would like to encourage you to utilize the abundant grace of these 40 days to break free of negative cycles and to redeem all that has been lost in past seasons. In 2016, Elul begins the evening of September 1st. So, set aside some extra time to spend with the King as He walks in the field…
The tide IS changing!
The waves are coming in.
The waves are crashing in.
Wave, after wave, after wave of His blessing are coming in.
Wave, after wave, after wave of His fragrance are coming in.
Wave, after wave of His love are crashing in.
….of His provision/finances are crashing in.
…of His presence are crashing in.
…of His healing…
…of His glory…
…of His favor…
…of His miracles…
…of His transformation…
…of His restoration of all things…
…of His ___ (you fill on your need) are crashing in.
There is momentous power in the waves of the ocean.
Kinetic energy being released. It can move anything out of its path and overcome it.
What you have been asking for, it is coming in in waves.
What you have been needing, coming in in waves.
What you have desired in your heart…it is coming in in waves.
The. tide. has. changed.
Can you feel the waves?
Can you smell the fragrance of the salty waves in the air?
Can you see the waves?
Can you hear and taste the waves of His crashing in and goodness?
The waves are crashing in…wave, after wave, after wave.
Go into the water and let His wave overtake you and carry you under to His deep presence.
No one enjoys being pruned. It is painful. It is confusing. And darkness is often right there releasing “fiery dart” thoughts of fear and failure. But according to Jesus, pruning is a compliment.
“I am the true Vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away;
and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He [repeatedly] prunes,
so that it will bear more fruit [even richer and finer fruit].”
Jesus Himself understood and embraced the pruning process. His ministry exploded after the miracle of the loaves and fishes. But He understood human nature perfectly and knew that the vast majority of the people were following Him for selfish reasons.
“Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover feast, many believed in His name
[identifying themselves with Him] after seeing His signs (attesting miracles) which He was doing.
But Jesus, for His part, did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all people
[and understood the superficiality and fickleness of human nature],
and He did not need anyone to testify concerning man [and human nature],
for He Himself knew what was in man [in their hearts—in the very core of their being].”
They followed Him, not out of self-sacrificial love, but in order to satisfy their lust for earthly food. It was all about them, and to them, He was the business opportunity of a lifetime! They demanded a sign, and they demanded bread. But Yeshua did not trade with their lust and selfishness. He willingly cooperated with the pruning process by echoing the sentiments of the Father, by revealing their heart motives, by offending them.
“Jesus answered them and said, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me,
not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life,
which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him….’
I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.
I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying,
‘How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?’…
Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day….
From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.
Then Jesus said to the twelve, ‘Do you also want to go away?’
But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
So those who were there for the wrong reasons, those who were not truly being drawn by the Father, were pruned. And almost all of them left Him that day.
Truly, God’s ways are not our ways, nor are His thoughts our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). To the mind of man, it would have been more effective for Him to have used these multitudes to spread the Gospel. But instead, the few that remained “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6).
We are all in different places of our growth and maturity. And where there is still immaturity, there will be selfishness. We must give ourselves and those around us grace to grow (II Peter 3:18). Just like Jesus, we learn obedience by the things which we suffer (Hebrews 5:8-9).
So, dear one, do not fear or give in to condemnation if you are being pruned. Most of us have seen first-hand from a garden that when one shoot is pruned, multiple shoots grow back in its place. And the plants that were once barren and sparse become lush and fruitful. Be encouraged. Embrace the pruning, trusting the hand of your Father, the Vinedresser.
“And let us not grow weary while doing good,
for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”
For about a year, the Lord has been taking me into heaven, teaching me about Justice, Judgement and Equity. I have been to the Waterfall of Justice, where His voice (which is like the sound of many waters) decrees Justice on our behalf. When this Justice (which is the foundation of His throne) is released, nothing can stop it! I have seen that when these decrees are released from His throne, they are Justice for the oppressed and Judgment for those oppressors who refuse to repent and come under the wing of Yehovah for protection.
On 2/20/16, the Lord summoned me into a heavenly Senate chamber. The 7 Spirits of God were there and said to me, “We will teach you of equity” (Isaiah 11:1-4). The Father then said to me, “There is a wave of equity coming to the earth. And in this wave, ‘…every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill brought low… and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed’ (Isaiah 40:4-5). As this equity is poured out, you must be clothed in humility. Equity is for the meek of the earth, enabling them to inherit it” (Matthew 5:5).
So, I put on my cloak of humility and went with Yeshua to our place in the stars, where I echoed His heart saying, “Let the wave of equity be released. Let there be justice for the oppressed and judgment for the oppressor. Let all come and find shelter under the wing of Yehovah.”
I had totally forgotten about this encounter until the Holy Spirit reminded me of it several days ago. And He revealed to me that the turbulence happening in the earth right now is this wave of equity being released! This is a time of shaking, changing, and rearranging. And times like these are always messy….
I began to rejoice that, in our nation, a people group which has been enslaved and oppressed for many generations (a valley) is being exalted and that those who oppress others and abuse their positions of God-given authority (the mountain) are being brought low. And I understood that, before this shaking even began, the Lord had shown me what my response was to be: humility.
He began to show me that He is stirring the hearts of many in the “Black Lives Matter” movement and that their anger is a healthy response to injustice and oppression. Yes, just like there are bad cops and prejudice people of every race, there are those who are using this movement as an excuse to hate. These ones dishonor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” And yes, there are ones who attempt to exploit the pain of their people in order to justify their irresponsible and lawless behavior and blame others for their consequences. But the Lord began to reveal to me that He is speaking through the sincere ones in this movement and that when they say “Black lives matter,” they are not saying other lives do not. They are simply responding to many years of being treated like their lives are not as valuable as others, and they are standing up saying, “We matter!”
So, even though “Blue lives” and “All lives” certainly do matter, this is not the appropriate response to the voice of pain and injustice. In humility, the meek will respond, “Yes, you do matter… Your life is of infinite value. You are priceless. Please forgive us for generations of communicating otherwise.” And little by little, these valleys will be exalted until there is equity in the earth.
“Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord,
But a just weight is His delight.
When pride comes, then comes shame;
But with the humble is wisdom.”
We are not to engage with “hate mongers,” and should not trade with the demonic spirits trafficking through them. And we are not to enable those who chose to remain victims so they do not have to accept responsibility for their actions. But, the Lord is looking for ones who can be trusted to walk in both wisdom and humility, because these are the ones that He can entrust with the rulership of the earth.
“Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.”
So, from our place of authority were we are seated with Christ in heavenly places, let us make this decree:
Father, we thank You for releasing this wave of equity upon the earth and for the Justice You are releasing on our behalf. We say yes to Your thoughts and Your ways which are far higher than our own, and we echo Your decree: “Let the wave of equity be released. Let there be justice for the oppressed and judgment for the oppressor. Let all come and find shelter under the wing of Yehovah.” We humble ourselves before You now, asking forgiveness on behalf of all those who have traded with racism, hate, prejudice, exploitation and oppression of any human being. We release the shalom of God into the earth realm now, that the necessary shifting will be brought forth peacefully, with no loss of life. We bless the godly men and women that risk their lives daily to uphold the law and to protect the innocent and we decree and declare supernatural protection on their behalf. We release the light of Truth into every place of deceit and corruption of power and we ask that darkness would be exposed and dealt with in every layer and every level of both spiritual and natural government. We thank You that mercy triumphs over judgment. We speak into the lives and the hearts of every individual and people group who has known prejudice and oppression the truth that “You are valuable. You are loved, cherished and honored. You are no longer a victim, but you are powerful. We call you to arise from the ashes of oppression and to fulfill the destiny which is upon your life NOW, in Jesus’ name.. so that His manifold (multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, multi-colored) wisdom ‘might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places…’ (Ephesians 3:10).
“Going out on a limb here and sharing something from my private journal today about my ‘Fear of the Lord’ gate experience. It is maybe a little different than what one would expect with Fear of the Lord, but none-the-less real to me. I only hope that my limited words can convey what I was shown. Aghhhh…so, here goes:
This gate was a completely different gate than the others I have seen. As I prayed to the Lord and went in the spirit to this gate, everything was in complete darkness (not scary darkness, but more as an ‘under His shadow’ a place deep in His center being, a place of Him brooding over the gate.) I could here the sound of a steady dripping of water, like from a faucet; drip, drip, drip…and in the darkness I saw a huge body of water with ripples circulating outward from the cause of the dripping water. It was like looking at the surface of the top of a deep, deep well. The thoughts of this gate were: “Dare I dive in deeper, to the deep, deep places of God – where I can not breath by natural breath, but by the breath in the Spirit.” A place of refusing natural fear for my own preservation and one of choosing to pursue Him in complete trust and abandon. Even as you dive deeper in an ocean, the “weight” and “pressure” of the surrounding deep waters crushing your earthly frame can cause ‘fear’; this was a chance to press beyond this fear and be totally encompassed by the Lord God. Deep in His pressence. Deep in His all encompassing center where I am completely ‘dead to myself’ and in respectful awe (an Elijah, jaw dropped open overwhelmed by His presence type of Awe) of His surrounding, life giving presence. Overwhelming. Overpowering. Complete. Understanding reverently of how BIG, how GREAT, how Omniscient/Omnipresent/Omnipotent He is….No hesitation. No dipping my toes in to test the water. I…Am…Going…In…Head First….”
One day in 2012, while in prayer, I suddenly found myself in a place in the Spirit where I had never been before and I heard the phrase, “walking among the fiery stones.” I was walking upon veins of gold. In between the veins, stones were bubbling up that were similar to opals, in that they had different colors within them. But each was a different color and emanated with a fiery glow. They were hard, yet soft at the same time, and pulsated with life. I felt a very strong nearness and presence of God in that place, yet I had very little understanding of where I was or what had happened.
Over the next few years, I continued to feel a draw to go back, this time hearing the Father’s invitation to come and dance upon those stones. But I could never seem to get there. I was being prepared and tutored by the 7 Spirits of God, so that I could steward greater revelation, understanding and authority. I had actually gone to spiritual “summer school,” and upon my graduation, was invited to walk with the Father upon the Ancient Paths. After walking with Him there for several months, He told me that, because I was in need of a creative miracle, I needed to know Him as Creator. Up to that point, He had manifested Himself to me there as Daddy, wearing simple garments much like I had seen Yeshua wear in previous encounters. But the next time I showed up on the Ancient Paths, He appeared within a Rainbow Whirlwind. Within a short time, He confirmed the validity of the encounter by having 2 people who knew nothing of it give me rainbow jewelry on the same day. Yet, I still had more questions than answers.
Several months passed, and then someone gave me a CD where Kat Kerr talked about the stones of fire and the rainbow which surrounds His throne. Her revelation gave me keys which enabled me to respond to my Father’s invitation.
We are called to be an earthly picture of a heavenly reality, which is why both Lucifer and also the breastplates of the priests were adorned with gemstones. They pictured the very heart of God. And it is in that place where we were known by Him before we came into this earth (Jeremiah 1:5; Psalm 139). Literally, IN HIM, we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). II Peter 2:5 says that we are “living stones,” and Jesus said in Matthew 16:18, “On this rock I will build my church.” We are these gemstones in His heart. And when the fire of His love shines through us, just as when light shines through an earthly gemstone, it forms a rainbow – the rainbow which surrounds His throne (Revelation 4)!
So, I began to worship, allowing agreement between heaven and earth to create a whirlwind that carried my awareness into heaven, where I am seated with Christ Jesus. I saw the Father’s heart as a deep, blue pool, and I dove in. Inside was like a warm and beautiful womb. At the entry were the stones – beautiful and glowing with intense, fiery colors I have never seen before and cannot describe. His love overwhelmed me in that place. This is my home. This is where I have come from. I suddenly understood the meaning of “I’m in You and You’re in me” (John 14:1-21). In that place, I began to worship with my heart, with my song and with my body, as I danced upon those stones, yielding myself, giving myself completely, trading something…. I was overwhelmed by the way my Father, the Creator of all things, allows His heart to be so tender, so full of love, so vulnerable to His creation. I literally felt a fraction of the pain He felt when Lucifer abused that sacred place, taking for granted His great love (Ezekiel 28). What an honor we have been given to occupy that place once again!
The next time I went back, I was immediately dancing what I knew to be a “chuwl” dance (one of the Hebrew words for praise that means: “to twist or whirl in a circular or spiral manner, specifically to dance, to turn around, to dance in a circle, to writhe in pain, to bring forth, to travail”). And I knew that I was travailing, laboring to bring things forth from the heavens into the earth.
As I have continued plunging into God’s heart, dancing upon the fiery stones, I have realized that the stones are at the very entry. There are much deeper places – “many mansions” – in His heart. His heart is so vast, so infinite that all the galaxies and every created thing contained within it are as mere specks of dust. Encountering Him is the endless love affair of all eternity.
So, to be continued…..
For several days, I have heard the Lord saying, “Quench not, grieve not.”
I Thessalonians 5:19 says, “Quench not the Spirit.” And Ephesians 4:30 says, “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God…”
I have heard this taught before, but today, He was reminding me again of this delicate balance.
Some things that grieve the Holy Spirit are:
• blatant sin and defilement
• selfish motives and agendas
• demonic infiltration
• failure to walk in godly authority, bringing proper correction to those who are doing these things.
Some things that quench the Holy Spirit are:
• trying to control or manipulate people
• not giving people freedom to learn and grow and make mistakes
• striving, good works and trying to be people’s Holy Spirit
• not giving the Holy Spirit room to move
• not allowing messes that come simply from immaturity
• choosing man’s “order,” man’s ways and man’s thoughts over God’s
We can only avoid these two opposing pitfalls with the help of the Holy Spirit. In the flesh, we will always err toward what is most familiar and comfortable to us. God is preparing us to steward a great outpouring, so we must develop greater wisdom and sensitivity to His leading. We must notice immediately when He has pulled back and then ask Him to show us if something is quenching or grieving Him. We must be absolutely dependent upon Him, realizing that without Him, what we are doing is fruitless. He is gentle in temperament, though fiercely powerful. Places of self and hardness in our hearts keep us from perceiving His nearness (or absence), just as Samson did not know the Lord had departed from him (Judges 16:20).
I did a little research on what ended the Azusa Street revival and, though no one knows for certain, it appears that one important factor was that spiritualists and palm readers began to sneak in, exerting demonic influence over the meetings….and William Seymour did not stop them. One of his greatest strengths was his willingness to keep his hands off and to allow the Holy Spirit to have total freedom in the meetings, no matter what it looked like. But his corresponding weakness was his failure to properly correct those who persisted in operating lawlessly and who were grieving the Spirit of God. It seems that similar issues have quenched many other revivals, including the Welch Revival.
Many leaders throughout revival history have either erred by quenching the Holy Spirit through heavy handed control or by grieving Him by allowing people to exploit His presence for selfish or occult agendas. And it is actually His mercy that causes Him to withdraw (Acts 5:1-11). The Holy Spirit will neither be controlled or exploited.
